Clean Eating 101: What It Is & How to Get Started

“It’s eating whole, minimally processed foods in their most natural state.”

Clean eating isn’t only about what’s on my plate – It’s about how I feel, how I nourish my body, and how I show up for myself and my family and how it helps me be the best version of myself every day. It certainly isn’t about perfection or adhering to strict rules; it’s about choosing real, whole foods that fuel me from the inside out.

For me, clean eating is a way of life that keeps me energized, clear-headed, and feeling my best. It’s about knowing where my food comes from, making mindful choices, and embracing the power of simple, wholesome ingredients. I believe that food should work for us, not against us—and that small, intentional choices lead to big, lasting changes. Over time clean eating becomes a sustainable lifestyle you won’t want to turn your back on.

Through nrshYOU, I want to make clean eating simple, approachable, and enjoyable. Because when we nourish ourselves well, we’re better equipped to take on life with vibrancy and joy.

I remember a time when every meal left me feeling miserable–Bloating, gas pains and fatigue. I was experiencing other symptoms such as brain fog, re-occurring migraines, and I was lacking motivation, and my energy levels were low. Although, I’d always been conscious of my health and what I ate, I didn’t know that the foods I thought were good for me where working against me. It wasn’t until I started seeing a functional medicine practitioner, who ran a series of tests, that I finally began to understand the root of my issues. My body was severely depleted of essential vitamins and minerals, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, and I was on the path to developing hypothyroidism.

What shocked me most was that, on the outside, I looked like a perfectly healthy, athletic person. But inside, my body was struggling. When I asked my conventional doctor about getting my vitals tested to understand my baseline health, he brushed it off, telling me there was no reason to test—I was “healthy”. But I knew something wasn’t right. I wasn’t about to wait for more serious symptoms to appear, so I took matters into my own hands. That’s when I found a functional doctor who completely changed my perspective on health and became the catalyst for my journey to true nourishment and well-being.

So What Is Clean Eating Exactly You Ask?

It’s eating whole, minimally processed foods in their most natural state. Eating meals that contain real single ingredient foods that are balanced and nutrient-dense that help support your body to live life optimally. It’s not about restrictions or diets, far from it, it’s about choosing quality foods that taste great and fuel your body.

The Core Principles of Clean Eating can be broken down into the following:

1.      Eating whole, real foods includes fresh fruits, vegetables, quality protein, whole grains, and healthy fats.

2.      Avoiding processed foods as much as possible is key. Additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients don’t nourish your body—they burden it, forcing it to work harder to eliminate what it doesn’t need.

3.      Reduce the amount of added sugar in each meal. Choose natural sweeteners like raw honey, maple syrup, dates and avoid synthetic or refined sugars like aspartame, sucralose, white sugar.

4.      Stay Hydrated by drinking quality filtered water and reducing or avoiding all together sugary drinks.

5.      And lastly, mindful eating is key. Listen to your body, slow down, eat when you are hungry and focus on quality over quantity.

Wondering how you should get started with Clean Eating?

Start small and know that every intention and effort will lead to bigger changes over time. Swap processed snacks for whole foods. Do you enjoy a sweet mid day snack with your afternoon coffee? Well instead of grabbing a chocolate or granola bar, opt for dried fruit and nuts like a walnut wrapped in a date. That’ll satisfy your sweet tooth while giving you enough energy to get through the day.

Read Labels. Learn how to spot hidden sugars and additives. When read properly, labels give you a ton of insight into what is in your food. So, swap the chips that have the long list of ingredients for something that has a shorter list. Today, there are so many healthier alternatives to the typical snack food.

Meal prep and plan out your meals so that you have access to healthy choices when hunger strikes. That can come in various forms from cooking whole meals in advance to prepping raw vegetables, so they are more accessible.

Stock your pantry with clean eating staples to have on hand.

Finally, be flexible. Life is busy and stressful as it is. Birthday parties come along, business lunches and date night are all part of life and benefit us in other ways. Following an 80-20 rule can be really comforting and encouraging. Clean eating is about progress, not perfection!
